except south carolina where newt gingrich started off hot and stayed hot. mitt romney is disciplined, focused in a debate he sounds and loos like a president as he did in his interview with brine williams on education nation yesterday. he will have a good debate performance. two, he needs an -- some form of implosion or serious mistake by the obama campaign or some international event that doesn't rally people around the president but focuses people on a perceived weakness. i don't think either of those are likely to happen. in terms of a mistake by the obama campaign, they've always been fairly safe and cautious. if this were a sporting event, i would say they're running out the clock right now. >> running out the clock and, in fact, perhaps too cautious. you've got hillary clinton going to, perhaps, a dozen meetings with foreign leaders and president obama already out of here in ohio, not meeting with any of the foreign leaders, do you think that they are playing it too safe by not meeting with president morsi, not meeting with netanyahu, avoided any pitfalls here in new york? >> w

'm, obviously, partisan. but just this morning on "morning joe," newt gingrich, who debated him many, many times, said that he got clobbered by him, that mitt romney, when he had to down in florida, literally turned things around, everybody saw that and knows that. mitt romney debated -- tim pawlenty said he's as good as a debater as there is, i'm telling you that because i debated him all the time. these are guys that ran against him. the fact is that mitt romney is very good debater. he's done a very good job. he's practiced and practiced and practiced and he's been flying around with, you know, the person playing obama on his airplane every minute. he's gone away and done five debates in 48 hours up in new hampshire or vermont or somewhere. this is the biggest deal in the world to him. he's been really getting ready for it and as we know from my experience with president bush, that debate can mean a lot. i went up eight to ten points after that debate, so mitt romney has a lot more going for him here. the president on the other hand, has to be president every day. just gave two speeches i tho

guess it was in florida with newt gingrich where he basically took gingrich's pants off on the issue of what was in his investment portfolio and won that state by a big margin. this is obviously tk- different. it's a national audience, not a republican audience, he has to win people over. it's a different kind of challenge over a sitting president who is pretty smooth performer. what john roberts said is right, debates sometimes make a difference but not very often. normally what happened in debates people for you going in are still for you coming out and not a lot of minds get chained. chris christie saying it could change everything, it could happen but not very much. martha: if somebody loses their pants it might be a game changer. we'll be watch that very closely. >> that depends, martha entirely on the design of the electri lecterns. >> we'll wait for the town hall format and hope for that perhaps. you just mentioned chris christie, what do you think he is up to by that comment? >> i have no idea and i'm sure the romney headquarters in boston, they are scratching their heads up

reagan was good at that, newt gingrich was good at turning the tables on questions this primary season. mitt romney would like to have some of that. that's not really his strong suit. the second best thing for mitt romney would be a major gaffe by president obama, so perhaps mitt romney could goad the president a little bit into some comments about small business other thans or something else. owners or something else. because the race is close enough that any change could have an impact. but, cheryl, historically debates have not moved the numbers all that much. four years ago when barack obama debated john mccain, mccain was down by five points when he went into his debate, and when he came out of the debate, he was down by six points. virtually no change. i think events on the ground, perceptions of the economy, economic news, perhaps things from the middle east still could have a bigger impact than these debates. cheryl: scott rasmussen, it's fascinating to see what your numbers are showing us, and they have been changing over the last several weeks. scott, thank you. >> thank you,

campaign that happened last year during which you have mitt romney, new gingrich and rick santorum agree enthusiastically we need immigration reform to attract more high skilled immigrants and they kept asking what about the border? literally they were having a little conversation about the bill, and then it was completely ignored because that doesn't sound like a border of sense to me. then mitt romney gave a speech about immigration reform that was oriented of facilitating the family unification and also for skilled visas etc. this is a marginal issue yet interestingly in the most recent years that we have data, you have more immigration, more skilled immigration than less skilled and also more presentation from asia than latin america. that doesn't mean any kind of change and it doesn't mean that mitt romney isn't doing well with the voters, yet it is also true that the immigration the date is framed in some ways and framed and others, it's important to keep in mind particularly as the composition of the population changes. i guess i see these questions are differently in that i see t

or gingrich and clinton in 97 with plenty of legislation passed that way. the other model would be reagan 81, bush 01, i would say which is to go pickoff the democratic senators or some of the democratic house members of you are a republican president or a democratic president could do the same and it would be an interesting tactical question for romney does he have to sit down with harry reid or sit down with joe manchin and mark warner and eight others and the same for president obama. i think the republicans are underestimating how strong obama will be if he is reelected and i do not believe that john boehner can hold if he has a margin in the house i don't think that he can hold off the republicans against dan obama version of the deal. the believes are stronger than the used to be. i think that we have more leverage over members in the campaign finance issues and other things but i think obama going to the lamar alexander in the senate and there are some equivalence in the house, even if the democrats don't control both houses of congress he would have some leverage to go round the lead

akin staying in, we saw newt gingrich helping to campaign with him. might we see any outside money headed into the todd akin campaign? >> well, from the perspective of the national republican party, they're hedging their bets. they'll wait and see if it is close. sources i've talked to said they don't think it will be, but they're going to not close the door. but with regard to outside groups, one of the biggest ones, crossroads, karl rove's group, they insist they will not spend money there but there are other outside groups. one was backed by senator jim demint. they did a poll of their supporters online, and they all said that they believe that they should back todd akin and i think we have a shot of the website. so far they have raised $138,000 in a week online. so, you know, that's not going to win the race for todd akin, but it is more money than he had before and we'll see how much money they raise in the next month. >> that is missouri. let's talk maine. you and i have talked about senator olympia snowe, on this show, i want to say last week. she was talking about how -- ju
